Back in the golden age of Cybertron before the 3rd war (began by Megatron) Optimus was an Energon store house worker named Orion Pax, and Elita-1 was a smaller pink Autobot named Ariel.
Megatron tricked young Orion into letting them into the store house, then shot Ariel and Orion. Fatally wounded, they were taken to Alpha Trion, who rather than repair them, remade them in larger more powerful bodies into Optimus Prime and Elita-1
They led separate Autobot forces for the duration of the war, until the day Optimus and his crew manned the Ark to save Cybertron, and Elita-1 supposedly perished just before launch.
