What is the purpose of Transformers Generation 2?

From what I can tell it's just a re-broadcast of the original episodes with a CGI intro, and a CGI cube. Why did the people behind Generation 2 try to act like it was a separate series, and why not just show re-runs? To me that seems kind of lazy. Instead of coming up with a new series they just re-packaged the old one.
